History of Lakehead University

Lakehead University originated from the 1946 by reforming from the Lakehead Technical Institute. In 1956, Lakehead changed its name to Lakehead College of Arts, Science, and Technology. The Lieutenant Governor of Ontario gave Royal Assent to the Lakehead University Act in 1965, and Lakehead University was founded. The same year Lakehead University awarded its first degrees in Arts and Science.

It has two campuses: Thunder Bay and Orillia campuses that promise the full university experience: a mix of academic excellence and plenty of facilities, as well as a wide range of social and leisure activities.

The main campus of Lakehead University is situated in Thunder Bay. Thunder Bay, located on the coast of Lake Superior in Northwestern Ontario, is indeed "outstanding by nature." Thunder Bay, with a population of over 110,000 people, offers all the conveniences of a large city while maintaining the elegance and atmosphere of a small town.

Lakehead Thunder Bay Campus has a picturesque scenery. The campus is bordered by a magnificent forest and surrounds the banks of the McIntyre River and Lake Tamblyn with accommodations that are in a walking distance from your classrooms and the cafe. It is only a short flight from Toronto (about two hours). All facilities are conveniently located in one place, giving the college a genuine campus atmosphere.

The bustling Orillia campus of Lakehead University, located one and a half hour north of Toronto, provides business, social work, and education programs, as well as a multidisciplinary arts and science degree with concentrations in criminology, environmental sustainability, media, film, and communications. The Orillia campus of Lakehead University is celebrating its tenth anniversary.

Orillia Residence is a contemporary, smoke-free residence hall with seven floors.

It is the recommended accommodation option for Secondary School students who are going abroad for a long time for the first time, as well as international and upper-year students who value communal living and the pressure-free comfort of being on campus.

Every student will have their own single bedroom, either with a shared bathroom with only one other person or a private en suite room, in an ecofriendly 240-bed dormitory. There are 40 single bedrooms on each floor, as well as a washing room, kitchen, and comfortable learning space.
