Programs

Together with becoming competent in ordinary subjects, Burnaby School District offers special programs to find out what students actually like and what their true passion is, to continue learning it in the future. As it’s important for Burnaby School District to prepare students for future employment, it offers various programs aiming at acquiring a certain set of skills needed for this or that occupation. Burnaby School Board offers other programs for secondary school students as a part of their academic enrichment plan. For example, one may try to attend a business summit which is a joint project with the school of business. Students may begin participating in the business program from the grade eight and continue their learning of business, computer science, business information management, statistics, accounting and marketing courses in high school, which will help them to become well prepared for university studies right after the graduation from one of the Burnaby School District schools.

The program can be attended beginning from the grade six or from the kindergarten, considering that it’s not necessary for a student to have even basic knowledge of French either, their family shouldn’t be francophone to be enrolled in the program. Three schools of Burnaby School District allow students to participate in the late French Immersion course, during which students can follow the usual curriculum of British Columbia, but study it in the French language. The aim of immersion courses is to bring up bi-lingual people who are articulate in both languages: English and French. Knowing two languages is not only a great advantage if a student is planning to stay in Canada, but also in case they want to live abroad as French and English are widely spoken all around the world.

Specifically for international students there is a program of English language learning offered by Burnaby School District schools. Students can take the program only in one school of the Burnaby School District, which is the Forest Grove Elementary and it’s important to know that the program is devised only for the students, who have very high competency in the English language.

Talented students, who have the predisposition to achieve higher academic results than their peers, can participate in a special program in the schools of Burnaby School District. There they acquire more in-depth knowledge of the subjects, develop their communicative skills through being surrounded by like-minded students who also seek to obtain more profound knowledge of the school disciplines.

Accommodation

International students have a chance to participate in a homestay program only beginning from the seventh grade. Younger students are to live with their parents or relatives. The Homestay program for Burnaby School District students is organized by Langara College and the number of places in host families is limited. It’s the obligation of the homestay family to provide a student with a private fully furnished bedroom, serve them with three meals a day and give students access to all the household facilities. International students are engaged in all the leisure activities with a host family and are always provided support and care from them. Most importantly, in case of any problems, students can always call their supervisor who will be ready to help them any time and, if there is no other way, change the host family. All the homestay families live within fifteen or maximum of forty five minutes' ride from the school of Burnaby School District.

Future prospects 

An international student can continue their education after obtaining a high school diploma from one of the schools of Burnaby School District if they want to have a chance to stay in Canada for good. One of the requirements to obtain a work permit in Canada after graduation from the higher education institution is to complete a full-time program, achieving a diploma, a degree or a certificate, which you can do in Simon Fraser University which welcomes international students to participate in undergraduate and graduate programs.
