If studying aboard is you or your children’s plan, Canada could be at the top of the list. Before applying a Canadian education institution, students need to understand the basic requirements from school and Canadian immigration law.  As required by Canadian immigration law, international students under 17 age must provide custodian declaration. There are two reasons can explain why minor student need to find a custodian.

Firstly, both public and private schools require that minor students must be cared for and supported by a responsible adult if they study in Canada without a parent. The custodian is the main contact person who provides care to a minor children and acts in place of a parent. They need to provide regular care, support, and supervision for the students all the time, such as school-related, personal and medical emergencies. For example, if the minor student needs to sign some forms, the custodian needs to accompany the student and sign on behalf of a parent. And they also need to communicate with student’s parents if students have issues especially medical care or emergency.

Secondly, a Canadian Visa officer will check all the required documents before making the final decision. According to the Canadian immigration law, the custodian file is a mandatory file if minor students under 17 years old. As we know each province and territory decides the age of majority. There are six provinces decide the age of majority is 18: Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. And the rest of the provinces and territories decide the age of the majority is 19. The Immigration officer could ask for custodian file if minor is 18 or 19 years old. In order. Therefore, minor students need to provide custodian declaration file in order to let the immigration officer satisfies the minor students can get enough support during they study in Canada.

There are two steps to complete a custodian process. A custodian file contains two pages: The first page must be completed by a custodian and notarized in Canadian. The second page must be completed by parents or guardians and notarized in the original or current resident country.  Once all the pages are completed and notarized, minor students can submit this file with other required application documents.
