Programs
In the crucial early years of a child's life, their development and future educational success are significantly impacted. Positive experiences and proper care during this period play a pivotal role in shaping their potential for growth and learning. From the moment of birth, lifelong learning commences, and the initial six years become a time of unparalleled discovery. During this time, children embark on a journey of self-discovery, gaining insights into the world around them, and forming the building blocks of knowledge that will support their educational journey.
Early Childhood Services (ECS) falls under the jurisdiction of Alberta Education, encompassing educational programs for children below the age of six. This includes Kindergarten, the year preceding Grade One, and educational programming tailored for children as young as 2½ years old.
Aspen View Public Schools takes pride in offering comprehensive Kindergarten programs in each of the communities it serves. Furthermore, the division extends its commitment to early literacy by providing the Great Beginnings pre-Kindergarten program at H.A. Kostash School, Thorhild Central School, and Vilna School. In instances where Great Beginnings is not offered, Aspen View actively collaborates with community-based preschool programs to ensure young learners receive a solid foundation for their educational journey.
In its pursuit of promoting literacy excellence, Aspen View School Division champions a Comprehensive Literacy approach, encompassing various essential components:

  • Read Aloud: Educators engage in oral reading of texts that surpass students' independent reading level, yet align with their listening level. This practice introduces children to new vocabulary, nurtures their background knowledge, and models good reading behaviors.
  • Shared Reading: Through interactive and purposeful reading experiences, students participate in reading texts as one voice, guided and supported by their teacher. Shared Reading empowers students to read fluently, with the teacher's voice providing constant guidance.
  • Small Group Reading Instruction: This personalized instruction caters to individual learners' needs, offering explicit guidance tailored to their unique learning requirements. Continuous assessment and observation inform instructional decisions.
  • Independent Reading: Students are given the freedom to choose reading materials and read autonomously, with minimal adult intervention. This independent reading time allows students to practice the reading strategies they have acquired while exploring texts of personal interest and relevance.

Aspen View Public Schools remains dedicated to fostering a love for literacy in its young learners, equipping them with the necessary skills to embark on a fulfilling educational journey and unlock their full potential.
An essential component of a student's performance in school is their competence, confidence, and desire to interact with numeric or geographical information for everyday decision-making, as emphasized by Alberta Education. In Aspen View Public Schools, a progressive approach is adopted to foster numeracy and mathematical understanding among students. The methodology involves a gradual transition from concrete to visual to symbolic representations, encouraging students to explore mathematical concepts using manipulatives like blocks, interlocking cubes, and counters. This hands-on approach facilitates comprehension and deepens understanding, moving away from rote memorization and prioritizing teaching for understanding.
Considering the importance of bilingualism in Canada, Aspen View Public Schools offers French Immersion programs to students from Kindergarten to Grade 9 in its Athabasca schools. By embracing French as one of Canada's official languages, students gain opportunities for future living and working both within Canada and internationally, fostering greater cross-cultural understanding between French-speaking and English-speaking communities. For those interested in exploring Indigenous language and culture further, Aspen View Public Schools provides Cree instruction from Grades 1 to 6, along with drumming classes available to all students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. These classes offer a dynamic and engaging approach to Indigenous studies and fine arts, immersing students in the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of Cree culture. Aspen View Public Schools takes pride in its Dual Credit opportunities, a collaboration with post-secondary institutions and industry partners. Through Dual Credit courses, students can earn high school and post-secondary credits simultaneously, potentially leading to preferred placements and workplace certifications. This unique experience not only boosts academic confidence but also prepares students for the evolving technological workforce by leveraging the latest education technologies.
Aspen View Public Schools, in partnership with High Prairie School Division and Careers: the Next Generation, also hosts the Forestry Trades Camp, providing Grade 10 students from various school divisions with hands-on experiences in forestry trades. This initiative opens doors to explore potential career paths and gain valuable insights into the world of trades.
Lastly, the Indigenous Land Based program at Aspen View Public Schools offers an enriching experience for approximately 200 Grade 9 students across eight different schools. This immersive program introduces staff and students to an Indigenous paradigm of learning, embracing a holistic lifestyle approach through four quadrants: physical, spiritual, cognitive, and emotional. By learning from the land itself, students engage in experiential education, enhancing their understanding of Indigenous culture and knowledge. In Aspen View Public Schools, innovative and diverse programming awaits students, enriching their educational journey and preparing them to embrace future opportunities and challenges with confidence.
