About Custodianship in Alberta

Overseas students under the age of 18 or 19 (depending on the province) are legally required to have a Canadian-based custodian while studying in Canada. The age at which an individual becomes an adult is determined by provinces and territories. This is referred to as "majority age." A "minor child" is someone who has not reached the age of majority. The age of majority in Alberta is 18. In Alberta, foreign minor students must have a Canadian Custodian. A competent adult who is a resident of Canada or its citizen is referred to as a custodian. In the case of students living with a relative in Toronto, the relative can act as the legal guardian. If a child does not have a family in Canada, our Coordinators can serve as legal guardians. If kids or families want this service, our supervisor will sign and submit a notarized custodianship agreement with the student's family.
