Custodianship in Saskatchewan: About custodianship

If an international student is under the age of 18, the government requires that they must be accompanied by a legal guardian/custodian. This legal custodian provides support to the student and serves as a university contact. This person must be able to communicate in English, be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, be older the age of 21, and live near the university where the student attends. The custodianship service includes the following:

  • Assistance in emergency cases (24-hour)
  • Meeting the student when he or she arrives
  • Accommodation, vacation, and travel arrangement
  • Track the Expiration of Immigration Documents
  • Coaching & Academic Support
  • Immunization Tracking and Disciplinary Follow-up
  • Check-ins and taking part in university meetings when needed
  • Graduation and Final Ceremonies Attendance
  • Contact with parents

A notarized declaration signed by the parents/legal guardian in the home country, and one signed by the custodian in Canada, confirming that agreements have been arranged for the custodian to function on behalf of a parent, must be submitted in the application. Officers must be convinced that suitable arrangements for the minor student's protection and help have been made. The assigned custodian and the parents/ egal guardians must agree that the custodian will live within a commutable distance of the minor student's planned accommodation and university. If applicable, both parents' details and signatures should be included in the custodianship declaration.

A custodian in Canada will be mandatory if the student is under the age of 17 at the moment of submitting application. Minors between the ages of 17 and 18 in Saskatchewan should have their applications reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Inspectors may consider the circumstances when obtaining more paperwork is needed or interview when determining whether the custodianship condition should be imposed. Officers should be convinced that an applicant can care for and support himself or herself when staying in Canada.
