Accommodation

The city of Vancouver, above all, is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the country, as more than forty-six percent of the population doesn’t have English as their native language. Students who come from abroad will feel comfortable in this community permeated with international spirit, as they will probably find the cultural centers of their native country and make friends with people from all around the world. International students who come to Canada to study at Columbia College can participate in a homestay program and live with a Canadian family during their studies in college. Special workers match families and students according to their preferences, mentality, and lifestyle, so that they don’t feel tension when living together. Still, in case of any trouble, a student can call the support workers at any time, who will, in turn, help to solve the problems or move a student to another family. More than three hundred international students at Columbia College participate in a homestay stay program every year. Students will communicate in the English language all the time, so they will immerse in the new language environment much faster. Moreover, every student is provided with a private bedroom and access to all household facilities. So they will be basically living at home, surrounded by family members but of a different nationality. Most of the students stay close friends with their host families long after they complete their academic studies.

All the families are carefully checked before letting them host a student, and throughout the whole period of a student’s residence in their house. That's why there is no need to worry about safety. Canada requires all students under nineteen to have a custodian, Columbia College helps to find them as well.

A homestay program for international students who are older than nineteen will cost 1,000 CAD per month. Homestay with Custodianship will cost 1,100 CAD per month, or 4,150 CAD per term with all the additional custodianship fees.

Adult students may rent an apartment while studying at Columbia College. Vancouver is considered one of the most expensive cities in Canada and North America, together with New York and Toronto. For instance, the average rent price for a one-bedroom in the city of Vancouver is around 2,400 CAD per month, but this amount varies according to the location of a flat and the type of its furnishings. A meal in Vancouver will cost up to 15 CAD, if a student prefers to cook meals at home, they’ll have to be ready to spend anywhere from 350 CAD to 800 CAD per month.

Future Prospects after Columbia College

After completing their studies at Columbia College, international students can go for Bachelor and Master's degrees at Canadian universities. If an international student has completed an Associate's Degree at Columbia College, they may apply for a post-graduation work permit within 180 days after the publication of their final exam results. This visa allows students to work in Canada for up to three years. Then, former students of Columbia College can apply for permanent resident status in Canada and even Canadian citizenship. By the way, Columbia College often conducts workshops to advise international students on the matters of immigration and employment, so international students of the college are never left on their own.
