You do not have to wait for graduation from high school to study in Canada. You can choose to attend Willowdale High School. It is a Canadian private school certified by the Ontario Ministry of Education. Willowdale offers a wide range of courses and an extensive extracurricular program for international students who want to achieve their goals in Canada.

Willowdale High School is situated in mid-town in Toronto that is only eight minutes walking distance from Eglinton and Yonge subway station. There are many restaurants, convenience stores, supermarkets, shopping malls, banks, apartments, and condominiums around this area.

Willowdale High School has small class sizes, maximum of 15 students, where teachers have a close connection with their students. The school also offers a variety of extracurricular activities in the fields of sport and culture.

Willowdale High School offers ninth-grade study courses in the following disciplines: Issues in Canadian Geography, Introduction to Business, English, Mathematics, and Science. The available courses for the tenth-grade students are Canadian History since World War I, Civics, Career Studies, Introduction to Business, English, Principles of Mathematics, Science, Visual Arts, and Music. The eleventh-grade courses are English, Functions, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Visual Arts, Music, and Introduction to Computer Science.

The available courses for the twelfth-grade students are Analysing Current Economic Issues, World Issues: a Geographic Analysis, Business Leadership: Management Fundamentals, International Business, English, Ontario Secondary School Literacy, Mandarin, Mathematics of Data Management, Advanced Functions, Calculus and Vectors, Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Nutrition and Health, Challenge and Change in Society, World Cultures, Visual Arts, and Computer Science.

Willowdale High School has a right to issue the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) to its international students. This diploma allows students to continue their education in Canadian colleges and universities. To get the diploma, international students have to meet three requirements.

  1. Students have to obtain in total 30 credits. It includes 18 mandatory credits and 12 elective credits.
  2. Students must pass Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test. It is a compulsory provincial literacy test that examines English comprehension. The test is held in late March or early April each year.
  3. Students need to complete 40 hours of volunteering. It is a non-paid social activity in the local community.

Willowdale High School also offers its students an AP (Advanced Placement) program run by the College Board. It is a study program that allows students to attend college-level courses. As a result, they earn college credits and can qualify for more advanced classes at college. At Willowdale High School, AP courses include Biology, Calculus AB/BC, Chemistry, and Physics 1: Based on Algebra. They are scheduled 45 minutes daily classes from September to May. Then international students pass the AP exams. The flexible and well-balanced schedule of Willowdale High School allows students to pass AP exams and earn the Ontario Secondary School Diploma at the same time.

Willowdale High School also has the University Link Program (ULP) for twelfth-grade students that is jointly run by Western Town College. At the end of the course, students receive a Willowdale High School diploma and an IELTS certificate. This program helps international students to study at the top prestigious colleges and universities of Canada.

Additionally, Willowdale High School offers English Language Program (ESL). This program helps international students to learn more about the Canadian learning environment and improve their English language skills.

Each year, Willowdale High School organizes a Summer Camp program. It includes extracurricular activities, picnics, a chess club, a book club, a debate club, and a club of young economists. This program helps students to meet new people and develop soft skills.

 

Admission Requirements

Willowdale High School has five semesters. International students can apply for the following terms: January to December (full year), March to February (full year), September to June (full year), January to February (winter semester), March to June (spring semester), September to December (fall semester), and Summer School (July or August). International students should apply to Willowdale High School at the beginning of each semester.

The admission procedure to the school includes seven steps. First, you need to complete and submit an application form either by email or in person. Also, international students have to pay a non-refundable registration fee of 200 CAD. During the registration, you ought to provide your scanned passport and transcripts for the past three years. Optionally, you can submit the IELTS or TOEFL test score. 

The second step is to wait for a reply from a student recruitment specialist. They will contact you to discuss your enrollment options. Then the admission officer will review your application documents and send you the Conditional Letter of Acceptance and the invoice for the tuition fee payment.

The third step is to pay the full tuition fee via bank transfer, wire transfer, or certified cheques. You should submit the receipt of the payment to the admission officer of Willowdale High School. The next step is to receive an official Letter of Acceptance and an official receipt from the officer. When you get all the needed documents from the school, you can proceed to the fifth step. You have to receive a Canadian study permit.

The sixth step is to choose your accommodation in Canada. Willowdale High School has two types of accommodation: homestay and residential placement. The homestay program offers international students a comfortable home atmosphere where students live with a local family. In its turn, the residence offers safe, secure, and well-maintained facilities. You have to inform an admission officer where you want to live.

The last step is optional. If you order an airport pick-up service at Willowdale High School, you need to inform the student service coordinator about the details of your arrival in Canada. The average tuition fee in Willowdale High School is 15,600 CAD per year. Additionally, the school offers night or summer courses that cost 1,950 CAD for one credit. The other expenditures include medical insurance that costs 675 CAD per year, the student service fee that covers textbook rental fee, and material fee and costs 750 CAD per year. If required, international students can use the airport pick-up and drop-off service that costs 150 CAD one-way. One more expenditure is your accommodation. If you want to live with a Canadian family, you have to pay the one-time homestay placement fee of 200 CAD. On average, homestay can cost you 1,100-1,200 CAD per month. If you want to live with other students, you have to pay the one-time residence placement fee of 200 CAD. On average, residence accommodation can cost you 1,100-1,500 CAD per month, depending on the type of room.
