The Calgary Board of Education

The Calgary Board of Education is a collection of 249 schools in which all together around 125 thousand students are taught to become enthusiastic human beings who understand what they want to achieve in their future lives. It’s a public school board which is located in the province of Alberta, in the western part of Canada. The Calgary Board of Education is financed through the provincial government. In a nutshell, provincial governments are in charge of the public education system in Canada, that’s why programs and age requirements are slightly different in each state. In the province of Alberta it’s the largest public schools Board. The education in the schools of The Calgary Board of Education is based on abilities of an individual student irregardless of their race, religion or gender. It’s noteworthy that the mandatory education in Canada is to the age of sixteen.

All 249 schools of the Calgary Board of Education are different and unique at the same time. On the one hand, each one of them came up with their own distinctive culture. On the other hand, they all share the same values, inclusiveness, welcoming and supportive atmosphere of the Calgary Board of Education.

Programs

All the programs that are offered by The Calgary Board of Education are based on the state mandated curriculum and include maths, social studies, languages and other subjects which vary according to a grade. For instance, there 10-12 graders learn career and technology studies in the Calgary Board of Education. On the whole, The Calgary Board of Education offers several stages of education according to the following order: preschool, kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, high schools and special programs for adults.

In the Calgary Board of Education students may also study Chinese, French, German and Spanish on bilingual and immersion programs beginning from fourth to seventh grade.  This helps a student to comprehend the culture of a learning language and its structure more effectively. There is a unique Early French Immersion program which begins in Kindergarten and lasts till the very end of high school: during the program students are being immersed in the French culture by speaking, listening and writing in French so incrementally acquiring the language. It’s made both for initially non-Francophone children with non-French speaking parents and also for the children whose native language is not English. At the stage of Kindergarten all subjects in The Calgary Board of Education are entirely in French and with time the proportion of English-taught programs are increasing.

During the Middle years students are gradually getting used to being taught by several teachers, they get to know their mentors from the higher grades during buddy programs and among many other opportunities on this stage, they are free to choose their second language, electives and some extracurricular activities.

High School in The Calgary Board of Education is time to determine your goals and understand what’s your true passion. The Calgary Board of Education perfectly knows that there can’t be a one-that-fits-all approach when it comes to determining your passion, so every student needs a personal path. A student may graduate from High School in three, four or even more years - this depends on your goals.Dedicated teachers and counselors who work in the Calgary Board of Education schools will surely assist you in the process of understanding of what you need and how to achieve the desired goals. On top of that, a student, who studies in one of the high schools of The Calgary Board of Education, is free to choose one of the following programs: Advanced Placement(AP) and International Baccalaureate(IB). Completing AP gives your additional credits that will be beneficial when applying to university or college if you pass AP exams with a high score. During an IB program a student is required to complete a definite number of hours of community service, together with attending educational classes and enhancing their critical thinking. The program also helps a student with his future life in higher education establishments. A student may choose to complete a full program of IB courses, IB career or Partial IB  programs. They may be taken by all students, you can also be transferred to the school that does offer the programs if your local doesn’t provide one. Complementary programs, courses on music, arts, drama and design are also offered in the schools of The Calgary Board of Education.

Programs for adults 

The Calgary Board of Education offers courses through Chinook Learning Services which are worked out specifically for adults to enhance their knowledge on personal development training or professional development courses. They also offer English language courses and corporate training. The courses of professional development include courses on writing, computer science, finance and developing skills in interpersonal communication. The certificates you earn after completing professional development courses can contribute to an easier process of job search as it’ll be obvious you invested in your education and self-development. In Chinook Learning Services one can also boost their knowledge after graduation from high school, to get prepared for work or for higher education establishments.

Fees

Public education in Canada is free to all Canadians, but parents still have to pay for extracurricular activities, clubs and field trips. The fees depend on the individual circumstances of each student in The Calgary Board of Education schools. If a child participates in the drama club, for instance, a parent has to pay 20 CAD in A.E. Cross School and 31 CAD if he studies in Belfast school and wants a field trip to The Calgary Zoo. Each International Baccalaureate course costs $200 per year. There are special tuition waivers for the families who can’t pay the fees, as money matters can’t hamper the education process of students according to the Calgary Board of Education philosophy.

The situation for international students is quite different. International students pay $12500 for a year in The Calgary Board of Education schools, application fee is $250 and health insurance, which is mandatory, is $500 for a year. If you failed to get a Study Permit, the sum you paid will be refunded. But if you can’t study for any other reasons you will receive a two-thirds refund.

As for courses on upgrading high school diploma, Chinook Learning Services of the Calgary Board of Education are happy to welcome students for evening classes that will cost $480 for 5 credits classroom learning. International students can also attend the high school upgrading courses in Chinook, for them 8 credit courses will cost $1840 and 3 credit courses $690. If an international student can’t get a Study Permit then the fee will be partially refunded and fully refunded in case of the cancellation of the courses by Chinook Learning Services itself.

Application process for international students

  1. Prepare your academic records from the last 2 years in the English language with a school stamp, letter of recommendation from your teacher or principal in English and an essay where you present information about yourself, and provide reasons why you want to study in the Calgary Board of Education. The essay is only required for students of junior and senior high school.

  4. Once the payment is received, your application will be assessed

An international student needs to know that if their first language is not English, first of all they need to learn the basics of language to communicate with peers and perform everyday activities. Then they should learn more advanced or academic English to obtain education the most effective way.  The Calgary Board of Education offers courses of English as a Second Language. In accordance with the level of English of international students, they can attend the same courses and classes as Canadian students.

The Calgary Board of Education offers international students to stay in host families as they cooperate with different homestay companies. Each host family passes a home inspection, interview and has a positive attitude towards hosting a foreign student in their home. Living in a host family is a wonderful opportunity for students to immerse into Canadian culture, understand all its peculiarities, hence more easily integrate into Canadian society.

Post-Secondary Education 

After getting a High School diploma, a student may choose to continue their education in universities, colleges and vocational institutions. During the High School study counselors will advise you on what subjects you need to study more deeply and what programs are better to take. Universities are also controlled by the provincial governments and that’s why there is a slight difference between universities in different provinces so you should make a small research on what’s more suitable for you.

Universities offer degrees, which means that after graduating from university you’ll earn a Bachelor's, Master’s degree or PhD.

In colleges students usually don’t earn a degree, but a diploma or a certificate. Education in colleges is based mostly on practice, not on scientific research.

Vocational training is also career-oriented programs where you’re taught all the necessary skills and gain experience for a specific occupation. During vocational training courses you can be taught to become a hair-dresser, nurse, massage therapist or a specialist in many other professions.
