Carleton University was established in Ottawa in 1942 and named after Guy Carleton who used to be Governor General in the 18th century. More than thirty thousand graduate and undergraduate students currently study within the walls of Carleton University in diverse programs on six faculties. 

Programs

An international student can study a number of different programs at Carleton University on the undergraduate and graduate levels. Let’s start with the undergraduate programs. One of the undergraduate programs at Carleton University is the one which leads to a degree in International Business. The aim of the program is to develop language skills in a very short time to a high level, together with teaching students business skills. During the studies in the International Business program at Carleton University, a student chooses one of the specializations: global financial management, international marketing or human resources management. If you would like to focus more on business studies, Carleton University is ready to offer you the program of Honours Bachelor of Commerce during the course of which you will be able to choose among eight specializations, go to international exchange programs, choose a minor in another discipline and do a co-op term. You may specialize in one or two of the following majors: finance, accounting, supply chain management, information systems and a number of other subjects. After doing a Bachelor of Commerce, an international student can pursue their studies on the graduate level in Edwards School of Business of the University of Saskatchewan in the program Master of Professional Accounting, which lasts for two years, each costing $27150. 

If you have been dreaming about working out the appearance, materials and special features of products which will be further manufactured and used by people, then you can opt for the Industrial Design program at Carleton University. The program is also interdisciplinary as students learn psychology, philosophy and linguistics during their university studies at the end of which they are awarded Honours Bachelor of Cognitive science. At Carleton University students may choose to do a research project or write a research thesis during their senior years. The graduates of the program can work on research projects, occupational therapy and even speech pathology or further their research of Cognitive Science to the next level. For instance, you can consider the programs offered by the University of Guelph - these are Master's and PhD programs in Science in Neuroscience and Applied Cognitive Science.

Carleton University also offers certificate and diploma programs such as Professional Writing, Science Communication, Teaching of English as a Second Language, Since and Policy and Mental Health and Well-Being. The last one is a certificate program which is dedicated to students’ gaining knowledge on mental health, but it doesn’t guarantee employment in psychiatry and psychology as for this you may need to gain credentials of a higher level, while the certificate program of Carleton University being an introductory foundation course.

One of the Master’s programs is in European, Russian and Eurasian studies which lasts for two years and aims at studying the history, political and economic situations of the countries. During the course of the program at Carleton University, a student chooses between two specializations: Russian and Eurasian Studies and European and European Union Studies.

Accommodation 

As for the residence of students, Carleton University offers various places to live from the traditional style buildings to suite-style ones. The first ones consist mainly of double rooms with a study room and a TV room on every floor shared by its residents. Washrooms are usually shared by the residents of two private bedrooms, while a vanity area and sink are in each room. Keep in mind, that in the residences of Carleton University it’s prohibited to cook, that’s why students are obliged to buy a meal plan and have a meal, that was prepared for them by professional cooks. There are three buildings of Carleton University which provide living in the apartment-style rooms. It means that in each suite there is two or four private or double bedrooms and a shared between them dining area and a washroom. Each room is equipped with an air conditioner and there is a TV lounge on every floor. If you want more independence and privacy, then you may opt for renting an apartment, the cost of which can vary from $950 to $1750 for a month, depending on the type of the apartment, its location and other characteristics. Anyways, living in Carleton University hall of residence will bring you the unique and inimitable sense of university community and will help you to build a strong network of like-minded people who will be of great help in your future life. International students pay for the traditional style residences around $12000 for an academic year, with wi-fi and meal plans fees included. Living in suite-style residences will be a little bit more expensive, around $13000 for two terms, but the price varies according to the type of room and a meal plan you plan to choose. 

Future Prospects

The university graduates are highly professional students well prepared for future work. That’s why it wouldn’t be difficult to find employment in Canada or anywhere in the world after graduation from Carleton University. Moreover, some full-time international students can start working in Canada while they’re still studying at Carleton University if they meet a set of criteria.
