Douglas College is the largest college in British Columbia, which allows students to study degree programs. It was established in 1970, which means that it provides local and international students with excellent education for more than fifty years. Douglas College has two main campuses in Vancouver, where more that seventeen thousand local and around 4100 international students gain education on different spheres including health care, business, geology and nursing. Douglas College offers Bachelor’s programs, diploma and certificate, a number of post-degree programs and of course English language courses. 

Programs 

In Douglas College an international student may obtain the Associate of Arts Degree and Associate of Science Degrees, studying a number of programs devised for it. As for the first one, there are many programs including: Anthropology, Asian Studies, Political Science, Theatre, Philosophy, Economics, Gender, Sexualities and Women’s Studies, History, Geography, Creative Writing and many more. There is a two years program of Criminology, where students are taught by experienced lawyers, police officers, psychologists and policy makers. Students learn how the criminal mind works, their psychology and look for the possible ways to combat criminal activity. After continuing their studies in Douglas College in the same field, students can work as police officers, transit police, bylaw officers, forensics specialists and polygraph technicians. After achieving the Associate of Arts Degree, you may proceed to studying for a diploma on the program of Criminology in Douglas College, after completion of which you will be able to work as a correctional officer, mental health worker or 911 operator. The diploma program will prepare you to work in the criminal justice sphere, learn about the justice system of Canada and forensics. You also have an opportunity to go for a Bachelor's degree in Criminology, which lasts for eight semesters. There a student learns how to prevent crimes, provides legal services as a lawyer or a parole office. In the third year of studies in Douglas College on the Bachelor’s program in Criminology you will need to choose a specialization among community and institutional practice, crime analysis and prevention or legal studies. 

An international student may also choose to get an Associate of Arts Degree of Modern Languages, lasting for two years. A student may choose among six languages: American Sign Language, Chinese, Japanese, French, German and Spanish. The program of Douglas College includes a co-op program, which means that you can get experience in the sphere of modern languages while studying in Douglas College so that upon graduation you will already have practice in the desired field. 

In Douglas College students may also study the program called Future Professional Pilot, after which they are also awarded with an Associate of Arts Degree. After completion of the program, you may also transfer your credits to university and achieve a higher degree. Bear in mind that if you achieve an Associate Degree, it often means that you will be able to enter the third year of a bachelor's program or transfer your credits to a university and further your studies of aviation. For example, one of the options can be the University of Waterloo, where you can achieve a Bachelor of Science on the program of Science and Aviation or Bachelor of Environmental Studies on the program on Geography and Aviation. On top of that, Douglas College collaborates with the Professional Flight Centre in which students can gain a lot of experience in flying which makes it possible for students to obtain commercial pilot license upon graduation. 

Douglas College allows international students to achieve a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Psychology. The program lasts for eight semesters and it would be a perfect choice for those who are interested in human’s behavior, mentality, ethics and who are highly empathic. During studying the program in Douglas College students will achieve forty five hours of work experience and have a number of volunteering opportunities to practice their skill with clients, psychology computer tools and labs. The third and fourth year students need to choose between several specializations they wish to concentrate on in future work, among them are the following: psychological rehabilitation, behavior analysis, forensics, leadership and management and pre-counseling. Douglas College claims that seventy five percent of graduates of Bachelor’a of Applied Psychology actually do work in the same field after finishing the college.

Another Bachelor’s program offered by Douglas College is Therapeutic Recreation. If you want to connect your life with helping people with physical traumas, disabilities, injuries or go over social isolation or other problems, then this program is a good choice for you. During the studies in Douglas College you will learn how to enhance people’s health, teach them tools and plans on making their lives better and how to implement different leisure activities into their lives such as crafts, sports, games and music. After graduation you will be able to make your career in gerontology, psychology, rehabilitation and psychology working in hospitals, social service centres and mental health centres. To be a certified therapeutic recreation specialist to find a high paid job more easily, you will need to pass a special exam after graduation, be sure that you will gain all the necessary knowledge and practice studying in Douglas College to pass this exam successfully. 

There is also a Bachelor of Arts program of child and youth care. It’s full time and it’s important for everyone who is going to study on the program to have a true passion about changing the lives and health of children for the better. During the program, you will need to go through three practicums during which you gain experience with working with children, the third one is the longest and lasts for eight months. According to the data of Douglas College, ninety five percent of graduates work in the field of child and youth care after graduating from the college and the possible positions you may occupy after four years of studies are the following: addiction worker, mental health coordinator, child and youth worker, family service worker, supervisor of youth services, youth development coordinator and a number of others. 

Students who wish to study on the program of Bachelor of Business Administration and Management in Douglas College can choose among the following specializations: marketing, trades, hospitality, business law, supply chain, human resources, public accounting and a number of others. During the program, students are taught critical thinking, economics, accounting and writing so that after graduation they will be able to become true leaders of their companies and just competitive specialists occupying such positions in a workplace as investment managers, sales administration, public relations representative or executive assistant. 

Douglas College has many diploma programs which last for two years and are open to international students. The diploma programs are the following: music, general business, computing studies, legal studies, stagecraft and event technology etc. Also an international student may study the program, after which they are awarded with a certificate, such as: accounting, marketing, early childhood education and others.

Douglas College has also organized a leadership program specifically for international students to support their accommodation to the college and Canada. During the program older international students mentoring the new ones, participate in skills development events and upon graduation are received special reference letters or certificates which emphasizes their contribution to the social life of Douglas College.

As for the fees international students are to pay studying in Douglas College, one semester of twelve credits will cost around $7500 and a year with thirty credits approximately $18800. International students also need to pay for medical coverage which is around $1100 for a year, transpiration, books and other supplies which, together with housing and food, will cost a student around $40000 for a year. 

Douglas College also awards scholarships to international students whose academic performance in the previous study place was excellent, and to the citizens of CIS countries, Latin America, Europe, South Africa and others who show high level of the English language and meet a number of other criteria.

Accommodation

Students of Douglas College have three accommodation options: renting, homestay and living a student residence. Studying in Douglas College you may choose to live in a residence called Burnaby Heights which offers fully furnished shared and private apartments with wifi, a washer and a dryer, a fully equipped kitchen and a bathroom in each apartment. 

Homestay programs mean that you will be living with a host family in Vancouver, also provided with a private bedroom, laundry and kitchen facilities. 

If you want more independency, then try renting a flat, but keep in mind that you will need to pay additional utility and internet bills. 

Future prospects

Upon graduation from Douglas College an international student has several options: come back to their native country and apply the knowledge gained to build there a successful career; further their education in Canada and extending their study permit; or stay in Canada to work and gain unique work experience, by getting a work permit, for which full-time international students can apply for after graduation if they meet a number of requirements such as being a full time student on the certificate, diploma or degree program, receiving an official letter from eligible designated learning institution and a number of others.
