Programs
Qualified and experienced staff at the Medicine Hat Catholic School offer Early Learning Programs (ELP) for children aged 3 and above. The ELPs provide morning and afternoon options, and they focus on developing various skills that are crucial in early childhood development. These include Social-Emotional Learning, Cognitive Development, Language Development & Literacy.
In ELPs, children participate in a range of activities that promote their growth and development. These activities include Sensory Play, Social Play, Literacy & Numeracy Exploration, Dramatic Play, Outdoor & Physical Play, and Build & Create. These activities are designed to help children learn to interact with others, self-regulate, reflect, problem-solve, and imagine, as well as communicate and develop emergent literacy skills such as listening, speaking, and story-telling. The ELPs at Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education provide faith-based and supportive environments that ensure children and parents feel safe and secure. These programs help children develop independence, initiative, and early literacy skills while also fostering social development.
The Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education charges different fees for their Early Learning Programs (ELP), depending on the number of half-days in a week that the child attends. The fees are as follows:

  • $365.00 CAD per month for five-half days/week
  • $292.00 CAD per month for four-half days/week
  • $219.00 CAD per month for three-half days/week
  • $146.00 CAD per month for two-half days/week
  • $ 73.00 CAD per month for one-half day/week

It is important to note that these program fees are subject to change annually. Additionally, student enrollment is based on the availability of the program.
The Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education has announced that their six Elementary Schools now offer Kindergarten programming. Children who turn five by December 31, 2023, are eligible to start Kindergarten in September. The Catholic schools provide morning or afternoon options in English and French Immersion, and children can attend a combination of half-day Kindergarten and half-day ELP in the same school day. The Board is committed to providing a safe, caring, and inclusive learning environment for all children.
The Kindergarten Programs are designed to cater to the developmental needs of all children, and the learning expectations are adapted and modified to meet the needs of each child. Early Literacy and Numeracy skills, as well as citizenship, identity, environment, and community awareness, are some of the skills that children will develop in the program. Students at Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education will also learn personal and social responsibility, physical skills, and well-being, and have the opportunity to express their creativity through art, drama, music, and dance. It is important to note that there may be up to a year's difference in age between the oldest and youngest children entering the Kindergarten Program. However, the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education ensures that the learning expectations are tailored to meet the needs of each individual child.
Parents should be aware that all program fees are subject to change annually, and enrollment is contingent on program availability. The Board is excited to welcome all eligible children to their Kindergarten Program.
The Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education (MHCBE) offers French Immersion programming from Kindergarten to Grade 12, even if parents or students have no French language background. Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education has three schools that offer French Immersion: École St. John Paul II School for grades K-6, St. Mary's School for grades 7-9, and Monsignor McCoy High School for grades 10-12.
The French Immersion program is designed for families who want to learn the French language. Children as young as 3 can register for Early Learning Program, Kindergarten, or Grade 1. All courses at elementary school, with the exception of religion and music, are taught in French. Students start taking English Language Arts classes in third grade. In middle and high school, the percentage of instruction in French ranges from 50% to 80%, depending on the grade level.
Students who enroll in the French Immersion program will develop bilingualism, an appreciation of the French culture, and fluency in speaking, reading, writing, and listening in French. Also, students of Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education will retain, maintain, and improve their competencies in their native language. The program's main objectives are to impart knowledge of the curriculum, address the children ’s educational preferences and requirements, foster the growth of a second language, and enable meaningful French communications.
The French Immersion program of Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education follows the regular Alberta Education curriculum in French and adds a regular English Language Arts Program. The curriculum focuses on pupils whose parents do not speak French while enhancing and completing their first language. It also enhances their academic growth and encourages new ways of thinking. Learning a second language not only broadens students' perception of their own culture but also teaches them about other cultures. Knowing both official languages in Canada opens doors to many exciting career opportunities. Please be aware that English is the language of interaction within the home and the school.
Last, but not least, the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education is introducing a new program to make it easier for families, and they are excited to announce that PD Day and School Break Childcare will be offered to Kindergarten to Grade 6 children during the 2022-2023 school year. Registration is open, and parents have the option to tentatively select the preferred dates of attendance on the registration form. Once the form is submitted, the PD Day Childcare Coordinator will reach out to the family directly to provide a detailed registration form for the child(ren) and share the payment process details.
