Starting with The Advanced Placement Program administers the Advanced Placement Program, which is a collaborative educational venture involving secondary schools, colleges, and institutions. The AP Program at University Hill Secondary School is meant to expand students' secondary experience in a range of subject areas for those who are motivated and able to commit themselves to college-level academics. It enables institutions to provide credit, advanced placement, or both to students who have successfully applied themselves in AP subject areas. Information regarding credit and/or placement of students at the college and university levels upon successful completion of AP tests is available through Institution Hill's AP Coordinator, individual university information offices, or the College Board. Advanced Placement courses include AP English Literature and Composition, Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Economics-Microeconomics, and Human Geography.
While the Business Education Department allows students to develop and exhibit their entrepreneurial spirit, traits, and work ethic. It is necessary to have a strong interest in business, innovation, and self-employment. Throughout the year, students will be responsible for planning and implementing a variety of business initiatives. They will learn how to construct and analyze a business, how to build a personal network of business connections, how to refine their creative and critical thinking abilities, how to work in teams, and how to give presentations. Entrepreneurial Thinking is becoming a sought-after skill set among institutions and organizations. Accounting, Applied Skills Rotation, Economics, Information Technology, and Computer Programming are some of the programs offered at University Hill Secondary School.
The English Language Learning unit aims to prepare students for integration into a traditional academic program in terms of oral proficiency, reading comprehension, and writing abilities. Students will practice grammar and reading comprehension methods and abilities, as well as speak and listen to comprehension in a variety of scenarios. At University Hill Secondary School students participate in cooperative and collaborative activities such as role-playing, oral presentations, interviews, and theatrical presentations, with an emphasis on oral fluency. For people who want to pursue studying the elements of meal planning and cooking, Junior and Senior Foods Courses are available at University Hill Secondary School for any student in grades 9 through 12. Students will learn to make a range of dishes while studying meal planning, recipe formulation, and recipe modification. Baking and flour combinations, staple grains such as pasta and rice, plant-based proteins, milk, eggs, fruit, and vegetable units will all be covered. Senior Foods is an advanced food subject for students in Grades 11 and 12. In the lab, advanced methods and abilities will be acquired. Preservation, seasonal and festive foods, nutritious snacks and meals, protein cooking, staple grains, pastries, yeast loaves of bread, and baking are among the topics covered.
The BC Ministry of Education introduced a new provincial Mathematics curriculum for Grades 8 and 9 in 2016, Grade 10 in 2017, and Pre-calculus 11 and 12 in 2018. Because different post-secondary schools have minor changes in their entry criteria, students who are unsure of what post-secondary path they want to take are encouraged to take pre-calculus math. At University Hill Secondary School students and parents are urged to investigate the entrance criteria for postsecondary programs of study since they differ by institution and year.
The Science Program is divided into two sections: Junior Science and Senior Science. The Junior Science program's goal is to teach pupils about the physical world, how to observe it, and how to think about it in diverse ways. Students examine their surroundings through programs such as Life Sciences, Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, AP Chemistry, and Physics. Where applicable, all of the courses make substantial use of labs, projects, and field investigations.
The Information Technology Department at University Hill Secondary School provides courses designed to introduce pupils to computer technology. It will look at computer architecture, terminology, and applications. It will allow students to learn the fundamentals of programming. Students will gain planning, organizing, and communication skills, as well as problem-solving and basic programming abilities, by utilizing applicable technologies in grades 9 through 12.
Just as important, the Social Studies Department serves the purpose of developing intelligent, well-spoken, and aware individuals capable of considering diverse views and making reasoned decisions. University Hill Secondary School Arts department has a long history of encouraging students to create high-quality student work in drawing and painting, photography, printing, ceramics, and sculpture to promote awareness and develop community. With Visual Arts courses in grades, 8 through 12 students will experiment with various art-making techniques to uncover their particular abilities and interests. While in Music classes character strength is developed through independence, self-motivation, discipline, confidence, cooperation, critical thinking, and musical literacy. Finally, Theatre Arts is a dynamic curriculum that allows students to explore, learn, and grow. It is a course that focuses on role development, character development, and drama as a form of expression via cooperation and ensemble work.
UHILL Counselling
Becoming a student can be a stressful event, even more, an international student. Oftentimes, students may experience anxiety, and difficulties or feel like they do not belong in the new community. For parents or guardians who harbor concerns about their children a school counseling unit was created. Counselors in schools have a Master's degree in counseling psychology. A counselor often begins with a pupil in grade eight and continues until grade twelve. Students are invited to visit their grade counselor for advice and support with school, emotional/social, and academic issues.
