Prairie Sky School

Prairie Sky School was fully incorporated and established in December 2008. Prairie Sky School began operating in the basement of St. Mary's Anglican Church on the corner of 15th Avenue and Montague Street, with a strong community interest, a keen volunteer spirit, and a passionate Board of Directors. The school had a healthy lunch/cooking program, vermicomposting, and a large number of public supporters. Much of PSS's vision and founding elements have remained consistent over the years. A great deal of evaluation and transition has occurred as a result of the gradual development of ideas in a grassroots organization. Prairie Sky School began as many good ideas do: with a gathering of enthusiastic, community-minded people in a living room, sharing ideas about what is possible. In this spirit, the employees will continue to offer a truly holistic education option to residents.

Programs in Prairie Sky School

Starting from the early years, Prairie Sky delivers the Saskatchewan Curriculum in an integrated, play-based manner at Prairie Sky Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten. The school’s play-based programs provide children with a natural, holistic, and safe environment in which to participate actively in our class, school, community, city, province, country, and world. Play fosters the development of creativity, imagination, and initiative. Learning is 'caught' rather than taught at this stage in a young child's life. At English Language Arts at Prairie Sky School early literacy skills are developed in children through stories and songs, imaginative play, puppetry, visual and performing arts, and sharing circles. Several other students often chose to delve deeper and start practicing their letter formation, whereas others at this age prefer to express themselves through oral and visual means rather than text.

In turn, mathematics at Prairie Sky School offers sorting activities with different levels of complexity. Learners show their counting skills at the start of the year by playing games like "Hide and Go Seek" or "Eagle's Eye." They create simple patterns by twisting their bodies into different repetitive shapes or chanting and stomping various beats and rhythms found on our daily environment walks or in the classroom. In separate units ranging from one week to one month in length, students begin to explore the numerals 1-10 through stories and activities with the help of professionally trained personnel.

Social Studies and Health for students commences by investigating the concepts of "Identity" and "Courage," noting differences and similarities. Students are taught safety and keep commitments to remind themselves of how to BE in a classroom setting. Prairie Sky School returns to supporting safety for ourselves and others throughout the year, whether through our Class Promises or by learning the Peace Process for conflict resolution. Prairie Sky School assists children in exploring their feelings through songs, games, drawings, and dramatic play to learn how to talk about our emotional responses, perceptions, and needs, particularly when things don't go as planned.

Prairie Sky School places a strong focus on the environment and its protection. Therefore, science classes play a very important role throughout the studies. Students are working with plants all year, from harvesting the garden to cooking, having fun with food days, interior gardening in the winter outdoor gardening in the spring, and just taking daily nature walks. They use all of their senses to investigate their surroundings.

Painting Days, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) activities, and the Performing Arts provide numerous opportunities for students to express themselves through the arts. During Exploration Stations, materials for painting, gluing, building, drawing, weaving, sculpting, beading, knitting, and other activities are available in the classroom. Drama, dance, and music have a way of infiltrating whatever activities the students are focusing on. Prairie Sky School facilitates visiting galleries and museums and collaborate on stage with the rest of the school several times a year.

Last, but not least point in the Kindergarten program at Prairie Sky School is physical education. Every day, beginning with mornings in the Outdoor Classroom, the school promotes healthy, active living. Students are given numerous opportunities to run, jump, climb, explore, and play. Prairie Sky School always incorporates lively rhythmic games and activity rhymes into our daily routines. Students go on daily Nature Walks to explore the neighborhood. In these situations, students frequently play wide games and cooperative games.

Next up, Prairie Sky School's Year 1 to 6 program takes place within a setting where children are taught the Saskatchewan Curriculum through art, community, and environment. Students spend a considerable amount of time outside and in the community, and nearly all of their experiences include performance and visual art modes of expression. Prairie Sky School has lecture halls for students of different ages with a maximum of 18 children per classroom; for grade-level instruction or project work, students are often divided into different interest groups. Working with the natural world, Prairie Sky School implements eco-literacy, which includes outdoor and experiential learning, and helps students develop a sense of connection, recognition, and commitment to the natural world. Integrated practices range from healthy food choices to seasonal and natural cycle celebrations to eco-friendly lifestyle practices like composting and recycling.

The visual and performing arts, as well as culture, are regularly integrated into the learning environment and academic curriculum. Community artists also take part in school activities, and student artwork is displayed in the school's community.

The physical learning environment extends beyond the classroom and into the surrounding neighborhoods and parks, and families and community members are regularly involved in school activities. The small size of the school allows for close relationships between students and families. A sense of community support is provided, while a sense of responsibility is encouraged.

As a next step, Prairie Sky School offers a comprehensive program that teaches the Saskatchewan Curriculum through place-based learning in grades 6, 7, and 8. The place-based year 6, 7, and 8 class includes 13 hours in the classroom, 13 hours in the community, and 13 hours on nature immersion trips. Students go on a 1-5 night wilderness trip to a different part of the province every 6 weeks or so. We spend time learning about our own city's natural and historical features. Students participate in inquiry-based learning through ideas based on their research question about a location. For example, the school could organize walking tours of a Regina neighborhood and study the forest biosphere in the Cypress Hills.

Accommodation

Saskatchewan's capital city, located in the province's south, is brimming with must-sees and must-dos. Although it is not the largest city (Saskatoon is), it is the cultural and economic center for Southern Saskatchewan and is located right on the Trans-Canada Highway, making it not only a perfect stop in Canada as a tourist but also a perfect place to stay if you are an international student. Students at Prairie Sky School must opt for a different place to stay as the school does not have the option of living in a student residence. In Saskatchewan, foreign students must pay a set fee for a private room, lunches and dinners, family assistance, and community festivals. In the city, the monthly average cost of a homestay is $650 to $800 CAD. The cost of a homestay is influenced by the number of meals served, facilities provided, and extra services.

Future Prospects

International students who graduate from Prairie Sky School have a wide range of choices for employment and further education. To begin with, students can continue to pursue their educational goals at any other educational institution in Canada. When a grad is ready, they can begin the process of finding a job. To begin, one option is to obtain a post-graduation work permit, which enables individuals to work in Canada for three years. However, to be eligible for this type of visa, international students must first meet certain requirements. It would then be possible to apply for legal residency and, eventually, Canadian citizenship.
