St. Lawrence College, usually abbreviated as SLC, was established in 1967 as a public College of Applied Arts and Technology. Currently it comprises three campuses in the province of Ontario in the cities of Brockville, Cornwall and Kingston. Today there are more than six thousand students obtaining education on a full-time basis and twenty thousand on a part-time basis at 414 faculties. International students are always welcome to study at St. Lawrence College. The administration established a special International Student Advisors team, which provides support and help to the international students regarding their education, accommodation and overall adjustment to the new environment. Thus international students will never be left on their own when they encounter a problem or need support.
Programs
First of all, it’s important for international students to be highly competent in the English language before starting their academic studies at St. Lawrence College. Usually for most of the programs of St. Lawrence College, it’s required to have an IELTS score 6 or a computer-based TOEFL 213 as a minimum. If your level of English is not sufficient enough, you may go for the innovative English course devised by St. Lawrence College. The course combines online evening classes and offline classes, which students attend during the day. During the online evening classes students can ask an English language instructor their questions concerning their homework or hone one of the skills, as the classes are held in small groups so it’s easier to meet the needs of all the learners. This innovative and unique way of learning the language allows international students to immerse into the anglophone world, studying the academic side of English in the classes and communicating with Canadians all the rest of the time. There are various programs offered by St. Lawrence College available to international students. For example, there are three programs which lead to a Canadian College Diploma as a credential: Business, Computer Systems Technician and General Arts and Science. The Business program lasts for two years and is delivered on the full-time basis. During the study period, international students learn the following disciplines: Business Computer Apps, Business Mathematics, Accounting, Economics, Project Management, Managerial Accounting, the Global Business Landscape and others. On the whole, students will gain knowledge on such broad topics as marketing and human resources to be able to understand how businesses function and how to operate them effectively.
The diploma program of General Arts and Science also lasts for two years. After completion of the program offered by St. Lawrence College, students will be ready to join a labour market or continue their education in the college or in other universities. The program is aimed at providing liberal arts curriculum and developing interpersonal, communication and analytical skills. Students, who decided to study the program, can choose among the following electives: Educational Psychology, Film, Fitness and a number of others. During the study period, students are instructed on the following disciplines: Critical Thinking, Multiculturalism, Sociology, Web Development, Business Mathematics and others.
There are much programs offered by St. Lawrence College that lead to Ontario College Diploma as a credential: Community and Justice Services, Business Marketing, Computer Programing, Early Childhood Education, Electrical Engineering Technician, Environmental Technician, Motive Power Technician, Instrumentation and Control Engineering Technician, Hairstyling, Law Clerk, Mental Wellness and Addictions Worker and a number of other.
For instance, the last program in Mental Wellness and Addiction Worker lasts for two years and can be taken at Brockville Campus of St. Lawrence College. The program prepares future workers for healthcare and social service, who are trained to help people with mental health issues and the ones suffering from addictions. The program is based on hands-on experience and practical assignments, which is very beneficial for students’ future employment, moreover the program presupposes field placement during which students of St. Lawrence College will have a chance to apply their skills in a professional setting. International students of St. Lawrence College can pursue only one Bachelor degree program of Business Administration. The program can be taken at the Kingston campus of the college and it lasts for four years. During the program students learn such subjects economics, accounting, human resources, strategic planning and develop their analytical, communication and computer skills. The cost of this program is higher, compared to the previous one, about $21000 CAD and the ancillary fees are around $2000 CAD per academic year.
There are seventeen programs which lead to an Ontario College Certificate which can become a supplement to your diploma or become a start for the further studying of an area of your interest. Among them are Food Safety and Security Techniques, Media Arts Fundamentals, Office Administration, General Construction Carpentry Techniques, Medical Lab Assistant or Technician, Personal Support Worker and a number of other programs.
St. Lawrence College offers international students four scholarships which are merit-based. They aim at supporting foreign learners of College during their studies in Canada and reduce their financial burden. For example, one of the scholarships is awarded to the ones, who are planning to take a minimum of two academic programs at St. Lawrence College. Another one is devised for the international students who have completed or enrolled in the Integrated English program at St. Lawrence College. The sum of the scholarships does not cover the full tuition fee, but a part of students’ spendings.
Accommodation
As an international student, you may rent an apartment while studying at St. Lawrence College or you may live on campus in one of the college residences. There are several of them provided by St. Lawrence College, all fully furnished and equipped with all the necessary facilities for a comfortable living. For example, the Kingston residence is located right on the St. Lawrence College campus and overlooks Lake Ontario Park. Here you may choose to live in a single or in a double room, the first featuring a mini fridge and second an apartment-size one. All the suites of the residence are equipped with air-conditioning system, Wi-FI, local telephone and smoke detectors. If you choose to live in a double room, your neighbor will be matched up with you according to your sleep habits and interests, as every student fills up a special questionnaire so that the staff can find your perfect roommate. The cost of living in the residence of Kingston campus is around $6800 CAD for a double room and a thousand more for a single room. Living in a St. Lawrence College residence presupposes buying a meal plan, which will cost an additional $2100 CAD.
The Brockville residence also costs around $6800. This residence allows students to live in double suites, with a shared bathroom and study room. Overall, there are fifty nine beds available to students in the residence of Brockville campus of St. Lawrence College, so it’s better to apply for a place in the residence as early as possible. Students are allowed to stay in this residence during the summer period.
The residence of the Cornwall campus of College offers students to live in one of the forty four rooms, designed for single occupancy. The residence is basically located in the same building where students attend their classes, so you have a chance not to leave a building on cold rainy days. All the residences have barrier-free rooms designed specifically for disabled students.
