The Surrey School Board is the largest in the province of British Columbia. The number of its students exceeds 72 thousand, among whom 1,200 are international. The district serves the schools of the cities of Surrey and White Rock and the rural area of Barnston Island. Surrey is known as “The City of parks”, more than 600 green zones and urban forests are open for walking and sports. Situated next to Vancouver, the district combines the comfort of the ecological environment with the opportunities of the metropolitan area. A rapid and comfortable system of public transport allows students to enjoy the benefits of this area.

The Surrey School District (SSD) consists of 101 elementary schools, 26 secondary schools, and 5 learning centers. It is one of the few growing districts in British Columbia. The SSD community is known for its friendly and family-like atmosphere. Receiving proper funding from the British Columbia government, Surrey schools demonstrate high standards of education.

A wide range of academic and elective courses are available for international students. They are integrated into regular courses. This way newcomers can learn more about Canada and the Canadian lifestyle and education. Specialized Programs that are open for international students include French Immersion, International Baccalaureate, Advanced Placement, Science Academy, Online Learning and Academic Summer School. International students can also take introductory courses in English as the Second Language (ESL). The duration of programs varies between one semester and a full year of study.

Within the student population of the SSD, many cultures are represented, including three thousand students of the Aboriginal ancestry. In general, 195 languages other than English are spoken here. This multicultural environment inspires students` creativity and out-of-the-box thinking.

The Surrey School Board focuses on the development of creative and critical thinking among its students. The district states its vision of education as the process of effective communication, and care for self and others. Learning by Design, a term introduced at the SSD, empowers the teachers to design learning conditions that are student-centered, inquiry-focused, engaging, and steeped in real-world experiences.

Modern technologies and innovations are introduced to the study process, bringing benefits to students and local and global communities. Four interrelated priority practices of the district include curriculum design, quality assessment, instructional strategies, social and emotional learning. Teachers, students, and their parents design the learning process together. It is a perfect combination of personal and professional growth and high educational standards.

International students who successfully finish their education at the Surrey schools get B.C. Dogwood Diplomas. These are the same diplomas as local secondary students receive. Most of the graduates have the possibility to continue their education at prestigious colleges and universities in Canada and the world.

The district of Surrey is known for its mild climate and boasts year-round opportunities for golf, tennis, hiking, and cycling. Its location next to the mountains and ocean offers excellent conditions for skiing, snowboarding, sailing, swimming, and fishing. Extracurricular activities also include athletics, soccer, football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, hockey and music and drama school clubs.

The Surrey School Board does not provide homestay accommodation, but there is an option to consider. All schools have contacts of homestay service providers for assistance. Parents can contact agencies directly and choose the best service for their kids.
