The university owns and operates additional properties across the city, bringing the overall campus area to 42.5 ha (105 acres). Before settling in its current position in 1856, the main campus moved twice. Among Canada's most environmentally friendly universities, the University of Ottawa is ranked sixth. The University of Ottawa takes care of the land by preserving and enhancing the campus' natural environment. For instance, 6 buildings at the university have green roofs. These roofs support the reduction of storm water drain, the cooling of buildings, and the protection for animals and insects. Green roofs also help to lessen the effect of the urban heat island. Moreover, there is one of North America's largest biofilter walls with a total of two thousand plants from 12 various species. This wall decreases heating and cooling costs by reducing air intake. On campus, there are over fifty garden spaces accessible.
