Canadian Mennonite University, or CMU, was established in 1999 as a private university in the city of Winnipeg, in the province of Manitoba. Annually, more than 1600 students are enrolled in the programs offered by the five schools and colleges at Mennonite University. The university welcomes international students; today, more than eighty students from twenty-eight different countries study at the university.
Programs
Undergraduate students can achieve a Bachelor's degree by studying the following programs: Arts, Business Administration, Music, Music Therapy, and Science.
One of the unique programs offered by Canadian Mennonite University is the Bachelor of Music Therapy. Through music, professional therapists can help clients deal with emotional, physical, and mental issues; overcome trauma; and just improve their general wellbeing. Such specialists are in demand in schools, nursing homes, and palliative care centers. Graduates of the Music Therapy program offered by the Canadian Mennonite University can as well work in private practice. During the program, students acquire not only the knowledge of human development but also the skills necessary to play a musical instrument at a very advanced level. Canadian Mennonite University offers students the opportunity to study piano, bass guitar, percussion, violin, trombone, or French horn. As for the academic courses, students take the courses in Chamber Choir, Ensemble, Conducting Techniques, Music History, Music Theory, the Art of Music and, of course, Music Therapy, among a number of others.
International students at Mennonite University, can choose the program of Bachelor of Science which can last between four and three years. Students may choose among three majors: Biology, Math, and General Science. During the four-year Bachelor of Science program with a major in Biology, students will not only acquire knowledge of biology, but also chemistry, mathematics, and physics. Moreover, they will have a chance to complement their studies with electives in social sciences, humanities, and theology. As for Biology, Canadian Mennonite University requires students to complete forty-five credits of Biology, studying the following aspects: Cell Biology, Cells and Energy, Ecology, Genetics, Organismal Biology and a number of others. After completing this program at Canadian Mennonite University, international students can advance their knowledge and obtain a Master of Science and then a PhD in Biology at Memorial University. Here, international students are to pay from $1,000 to $1,600 per semester for a Master’s program that lasts for two years. The PhD at Memorial University lasts for four years and costs around $1,500 per term.
Canadian Mennonite University offers international students the opportunity to obtain a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and choose among five majors: Accounting, Business Management, Human Resource Management, Non-for-Profit Management, and Social Entrepreneurship. This program can be taken as a co-op at Canadian Mennonite University. The co-op program in Business Administration presupposes six terms of work placement and getting a minimum of 120 credit hours. Such a combination of work and academic studies allows students not only to immediately try their newly acquired knowledge in practice but also gain valuable insights from more experienced colleagues and supervisors, which wouldn’t be possible in a classroom environment. Having gained a Bachelor’s of Business Administration, international students can then go for a Master of Business Administration also at Canadian Mennonite University. It offers a so-called collaborative MBA, which was worked out in collaboration with Bluffon University, Goshen College and other post-secondary educational establishments. This program doesn’t focus solely on developing students’ technical skills, but also their interpersonal skills and personal formation so that they can become leaders, who doesn’t cause harm to society or the environment. The MBA program at Canadian Mennonite University is delivered in a blended format, which means that some of the courses are delivered online and some are delivered in an offline mode. International students may as well achieve a Master of Business Administration at the University of Canada West, which will take two years and cost around $36,900 for the whole program. This one allows students to take electives from Project Management, Leadership. Entrepreneurship, Business Analytics, Non-profit and other spheres.
At the graduate level, Mennonite University offers students to achieve the degrees of Master of Arts, Master of Business Administration, and Master of Divinity. A Master of Arts can be taken with one of the following concentrations: Christian Ministry, Theological Studies, or Collaborative Development.
As for the financial aid at Canadian Mennonite University, international students are not provided with the scholarships that would cover the full tuition fee. But there are still some bursaries and scholarships that can help to cover a part of it. Most of them are merit-based, which means that you need to show high academic achievements at your previous place of studies or at Canadian Mennonite University. There is also a Church matching grant, which means that a local church can provide an international student at Canadian Mennonite University with up to a thousand dollars annually. Canadian Mennonite University provides the services of a special advisor, who will consult students on financial matters. On the whole, international students who study at Canadian Mennonite University should be prepared to pay around $17,000 annually if they live in one of the residences and use a meal plan. Accommodation
Think about your housing options in advance before coming to Winnipeg to study. It’s the largest city in the province, which is located on the confluence of two rivers but was named after the lake of the same name. Ninety-nine percent of the city's population are English speakers, so international students will immerse in the anglophone environment, achieving proficiency in the English language much faster.
International students at Canadian Mennonite University are offered the opportunity to live on-campus, which includes apartments and dormitories in three buildings. One of the buildings has both dormitory-style and apartment-style rooms. The sections of the buildings are divided according to the gender of students, so there are thirty-three rooms in the women’s part of a building and twenty-four rooms in the men’s section. Here, Canadian Mennonite University students can choose to live in a private or in a double room, sharing it with a neighbor. All rooms are equipped with beds, closets, and study spaces. There are fifteen apartment-style rooms of two kinds: studio and two-bedroom. This building of the Canadian Mennonite University also features lounge rooms with cable TV, foosball and pool tables for students’ leisure activities and interaction.
Another building of the Canadian Mennonite University has only apartment-style rooms: one-bedroom, two-bedroom, three-bedroom, and studios. All of them include a fully-equipped kitchen, a bathroom, and a living area. The residents of all the rooms, both dormitory and apartment-style, have free access to Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, and parking lots.
Irrespective of the chosen accommodation style, international students of the Canadian Mennonite University are obliged to buy a meal plan. A minimal meal plan for apartment-style residents includes one lunch and one dinner per week, which will cost an international student around $357 per term. A full meal plan, which is required to be bought by all dormitory-style room residents, will cost around $2,370 per semester.
As for the cost of living, a dormitory-style single room will cost an international student around $1,670, while a one-bedroom with no bath apartment will cost $3,130, or $1,630 per person.
International students studying at Canadian Mennonite University can also live off-campus if they find it a more convenient option or if there are no vacant places in one of the university residences. Renting a bachelor suite in the city of Winnipeg will cost a Canadian Mennonite University student around $740, while a one-bedroom apartment will cost around $1,230. This price is average as the final cost will still depend on the proximity of a flat to the city centre and the type of furnishing. Before renting an apartment, consider its proximity to the Canadian Mennonite University as well. It’s located in the south-west quadrant of Winnipeg, and you probably don’t want to spend a lot of time commuting to your classes.
Future Prospects
International students can start working even during their studies at the Mennonite University, as a study permit allows foreign students to work twenty hours a week on-campus and off-campus. Still, you may need to follow certain rules and meet a number of requirements to work off-campus. So, after completing your full-time university studies, an international student can continue their working path and get the post-graduation work permit. After three years of working in Canada, foreign citizens can get the Express Entry, in other words, a permit for permanent residence in the country and continue working legally.
