Georges Vanier Secondary School

Georges Vanier Secondary School (GVSS) is a vibrant learning environment that provides a wide range of options to fulfill the requirements of all students. The school was named after Canada's first French-Canadian Governor General, Georges Vanier, and is located in the North York district of Toronto, Ontario. It is owned and operated by the North York Board of Education. Students at Georges Vanier Secondary School are forced to explore, reason, and explain their points of view. The school features amazing multi-media labs, music and art studios, a flight simulator, and cutting-edge production equipment including a 3D printer and laser cutter. They assist all children, from those who desire to pursue a demanding, advanced curriculum to those who are developing. The primary purpose of Georges Vanier Secondary School is to instill in our students a strong sense of community involvement and civic participation. The students' reactions to local and global crises illustrate their dedication to assisting others less fortunate. GVSS is a community that prioritizes students.

Programs

Georges Vanier Secondary School is a vibrant learning environment that provides a wide range of options to fulfill the requirements of all students. We provide a wide choice of courses within the Ontario Curriculum. We are excited to introduce STEM+, a grade 9-12 enrichment program in Mathematics and Science that approaches the curriculum from a global, social justice viewpoint. In addition, we provide four Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs (Aviation & Aerospace, Arts & Culture, Business, and ICT) that appeal to individuals with diverse academic interests and passions.

To begin with, Co-operative Education at Georges Vanier Secondary School plays a major part in forming the rigorous curriculum that concentrates on helping students make decisions for their future. Cooperative Education is a ministry-approved initiative that permits TDSB students to earn secondary school credits while working. The program includes a cooperative education course supervised by a cooperative education instructor, a relevant curricular course in any topic, and a work placement.

Since a considerable part of students at Georges Vanier Secondary School comes from other countries, the English Department has set up a comprehensive course in English as a Second Language with 5 levels of learning. The ESL program is founded on the notion that students' capacity to take their place in society as responsible and productive citizens is dependent on their ability to communicate effectively in English. The curriculum is intended to provide English language learners with the information and skills required to meet these objectives. Its goal is to assist students in becoming successful English language learners who can confidently integrate into mainstream courses, use English effectively to advocate for themselves in all aspects of their lives and make a smooth transfer to their chosen postsecondary destination. Having pretty much the same goal, the Literacy Department of Georges Vanier Secondary School incorporates a variety of courses to facilitate all students’ adaption to the learning process. Literacy Support Classes are running throughout winter and spring typically taking place after school.

However, English is not the only language students are given the possibility to learn. French, Spanish, and surprise, surprise – Mandarin courses at Georges Vanier Secondary School offer extended opportunities to speak and independently interact in French with courses from grades 9 to 12.

Moving on to the Science Department, which encompasses such special programs as STEM+, AP Physics, AP Chemistry, and AP Biology. During AP programs Georges Vanier Secondary School students participate in university-level study, where they take coursework that is more challenging than most other high school offerings. Science's principal purpose is to comprehend the natural and human-created worlds. Science refers to various techniques used by people to gain information about nature, as well as an organized body of knowledge gained via these activities. Science is a vibrant and creative endeavor with a long and fascinating history.

The Department of Social Science and Humanities at Georges Vanier is unlike any other! Dynamic, hands-on, and committed to developing critical thinkers! Canadian and World Studies (Geography, History, and Law), Social Sciences (Psychology, Anthropology, Sociology, Philosophy, Leadership, and Fashion), and Family Studies are also part of this department (including Parenting and Cooking). The guiding force at the head of this department is around experiential learning and real-world experience for our students' success. This department produces competent critical thinkers via devoted professors, engaging field excursions, and work/study opportunities—a desirable ability in today's society. The special courses of this department include Social Science International School Trip, STEM+ program, Mock Court Room Simulations, and Field Trips to different museums and parks.

An important part of every secondary school’s curriculum is the Mathematics Department. Georges Vanier Secondary School is no different, it just has its approach. Knowing how to learn mathematics is the basic requirement that every student must meet in every subject. Taking the conditions of a real-world issue and describing them in mathematical form is a crucial aspect of the inquiry process. Such programs are presented: Principles of Mathematics, Foundations of Mathematics, Functions (and Applications), Advanced Functions, and Math of Data Management.

Aside from that, the goal of Georges Vanier Secondary School is to promote high-quality learning while allowing students to select programs that match their abilities and interests. The new Ontario curriculum, along with a greater choice of learning opportunities outside of traditional classroom instruction, will allow students to better personalize their high school education and increase their chances of academic and life success. The course options are presented as Information and Communication Technology in Business, Financial Accounting, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, International Business, Management Fundamentals, and Sports & Entertainment Marketing.

Georges Vanier Secondary School is a place where art is synonymous with innovation. Take for example the Drama course which allows pupils to take on roles, construct and inhabit imagined worlds, and explore their creativity. They learn about themselves, the art of drama, and the world around them uniquely. As they develop, perform, and analyze theatre, students participate in social interaction and teamwork in grades 9 through 12. The "one-of-a-kind" Vanier Recording Studio is an interesting place inside the institution. There are five distinct recording areas. Whatever music you want to make and record can be done at the Vanier Studio. This is a course for students who want to learn about the role of computers in modern music. Students get firsthand knowledge of how to use computers and music technology for creative inquiry, composition, and performance. Along with the guitar, instrumental music, vocal/choral, and drum courses all that can be taken at Georges Vanier Secondary School.

Last, but not least is the Student Success unit which works with guidance and Special Education to identify kids who are not meeting their full potential. Supports and interventions are implemented based on the requirements of the children. These may be ongoing interventions such as credit recovery for previously failed courses or credit rescue for currently enrolled courses. The Special Education space for all students, in turn, provides the resource room, assistance with assignment completion, and a quiet work place.
