Northern College

College is located in the province of Ontario and has altogether four campuses in its Northeastern part. Northern College offers undergraduate and graduate programs on the full-time and part-time basis in the online and offline mode providing students a lot of flexibility. International students are welcome to study at the Northern College as it gives them a lot of career opportunities in the future.

Programs

Before starting your academic post-secondary education at the  College, you need to have a certain level of proficiency in the English language. To assist international students in comprehension of English,  College offers two programs for honing their language skills. International students may choose to study English as A Second Language or English Academic Program if their English level is not sufficient enough for the Northern College. For instance, if an international student already has an IELTS band score 6.5 then they may not undertake an additional English program, but if the score is below this level, they will need to complete one of the programs lasting for a term or two. The English as a Second Language Program will cost international students around $5400 CAD and the English Academic Program will cost around $11100 per academic year. Sometimes an international student doesn’t have a valid IELTS or other English proficiency exam certificate, in this case, they will need to pay an additional forty five dollars for a placement test that would assess their English knowledge.

Once a student has a high level of English, they may choose one of the academic programs offered by the College, leading to diplomas, certificates and degrees as academic credentials. For example, international students have a chance to study the following programs in the field of Community Services: Additions and Mental Health Workers, Early Childhood Education and Social Service Workers. These three programs of Northern College lead to a diploma and last for two academic years. International students need to have an IELTS band score six to be eligible for these programs. For example, the program of Addiction and Mental Health Worker is held in all the campuses of Northern College and in the online mode. In general, being fully career focused, all the educational programs at Northern College are aimed at teaching only effective and applicable in practice methods and tools, so that students can be ready to start their working path right after graduation. After completion of the program at Northern College, students can work as counselors, case managers and social workers who can efficiently help people in the times of troubles and the ones suffering from addictions. During the program, international students are gradually getting rid of the prejudices and bias surrounding the people with addiction problems, by enriching their knowledge of this aspect of life, studying the roots of the issues and learning possible solutions and preventive methods for individuals and society as a whole. The program of Addiction and Mental Health Worker at Northern College presupposes a fieldwork placement which lasts for 650 hours, during which international students will work in recovery and rehabilitation centres, shelters and crisis support agencies to implement the gained theoretical knowledge in practice. If an international student chose to study the program in the online mode at the Northern College, then they will also need to pay for their own travel to lab locations, which can often be out of town. The profession of mental health worker, who deals specifically with people suffering from addictions, may be extremely challenging, but the program of Northern College will instruct students on work ethics and coping strategies which aim at alleviating the possible hardship of their future job. The first year of studying the diploma program in Addictions and Mental Health Worker will cost an international student around $15700 CAD. After a successful completion of the program at Northern College, an international student can go for the degree of Bachelor of Social Science and study the program of Addictions and Mental Health more profoundly at the Humber College, which is also located in the province of Ontario.

In the field of Business and Office Administration at the College international students can study the following programs: Business Fundamentals, Business General, Business Accounting, Global Business Entrepreneurship and Technology, Supply Chain Management and Information System Business Analysis. For example, the average rent price for a one-bedroom flat in Timmins is around $995 CAD. An international student may as well rent a room and share a kitchen and a bathroom with a landlord or with a neighbor, who occupies another room. Such an option will cost a student around $525 per month in Haileybury.

International students can live on-campus in one of the Northern College residences in Haileybury. The residence is equipped with all the necessary facilities and rooms are fully furnished for the students of Northern College to feel at home and enjoy their studenthood. Students don’t need to spend time paying utility bills, as the pricing for living in the Northern College residence is all-inclusive. International students can also make a lot of friends and socialize during their residence in a shared accommodation, as students of Northern College often hold various events and communicate with each other, while using shared study and lounge rooms.

Future Prospects

There are many opportunities for international students who have graduated from Northern College. On the one hand, they can certainly come back to their country and start a distinguished career there with all the knowledge and practice they gained during their studies at the Northern College. On the other hand, graduation from Northern College is a unique opportunity to obtain a post-graduation work permit, i.e. a working visa for the foreigners who have successfully completed a full-time academic program in Canada. The study permit stays valid for ninety days after a student’s graduation from Northern College, so try to make no delay with applying for the work permit, which is going to last for up to three years. This valuable work experience can then be used for applying for permanent residence in Canada, a so-called Express Entry, which is given to the skilled foreign citizens who worked in Canada and wish to keep working here for long.
