Université de Moncton

This public university was established in 1963 in the province of New Brunswick, and today it has campuses in the cities of Edmundston, Moncton, and Shippagan. The Université de Moncton is the largest francophone university located outside of the province of Quebec, with an annual enrollment of 4,655 students in full-time programs. New Brunswick is one of the three Atlantic provinces, and it’s the third least populous province in the country. The two official languages in this province are French and English, with two-thirds of the population being English speakers and the rest speaking French. Here, all public services are provided in both of the languages as well. It’s interesting that more and more people in the province of New Brunswick report being bilingual, which is about thirty-four percent of its population. The Université de Moncton promotes bilingualism not only among Canadians but also among international students. Around twenty-seven percent of Université de Moncton students came from abroad to obtain post-secondary education in the French language. Besides high-quality education, the Université de Moncton offers students the opportunity to fulfill their lives by participating in athletics, theater, live performances, and radio clubs. By the way, there is a student radio station at the Université de Moncton called Codiac FM, where students have an opportunity to try their oratory skills in practice. There is also a stadium at the Moncton campus with a capacity for an audience of more than ten thousand people, where the university often hosts various entertaining and athletic events.

Programs

It's important to know the French language as the Université de Moncton is fully francophone. During the first year of their studies, non-francophone full-time students can apply for the French Immersion program and write some of the exams and home assignments in the English language. Still, the exams in French will be held in French.

International students have a chance to participate in a program of student mobility during their studies and travel to one of the twenty-seven countries where the Université collaborates with educational institutions. International students can do an internship abroad or take a summer study program, as well as immersion and international studies programs. As for the immersion programs, the Université students can undertake an Academic Spanish program, which lasts for twelve weeks and is held at the Universidad de Colima in Mexico. The English immersion program requires traveling to the United States, and the German immersion program requires traveling to Germany. The Université de Moncton students don’t need to know the language they wish to take a course in. Moreover, a language immersion program taken abroad brings academic credits towards graduation, if a student has really made progress in a language and advanced their skills.

Another interesting program offered by the Université de Moncton is called International Passport. It aims to teach students the skills of successful intercultural communication. For example, within the program of International Passport, international students need to attend a number of workshops, conferences, and participate in volunteering activities. International students need to volunteer for a Canadian company for at least twenty hours and work in a Canadian organization for at least 130 hours per term to achieve the points necessary to complete the program. This program of the Université de Moncton encourages international students to integrate into Canadian society and enrich their knowledge without losing their national identity, while Canadian students also learn about the diversity of other cultures and strategies for intercultural communication, broadening their horizons. This program leads to a certificate, and it’s also free of charge.

As for academic studies, the Université de Moncton has seven faculties: Business Administration, Art and Social Sciences, Law, Engineering, Sciences, Health and Community Service Sciences, and Educational Sciences.

The Faculty of Art and Social Sciences at the Université de Moncton offers the following programs: Criminology, English, Dramatic art, Geography, French Studies, Translation, Political Science, Philosophy, and a number of others. The program of Translation lasts for four years. This program can be started on all three campuses of the Université de Moncton, but the last three academic years are offered only on the Moncton campus of the university. This program is devised for students who are native French speakers or very proficient in this language and who also have an advanced level of English. During the program, students learn not only all the peculiarities of French and English translation, but they also study the third language, which can be either German or Spanish. Translation students at the Université de Moncton study commercial, technical, and administrative translation and then can further their studies at Concordia University. This university has a special program for future professionals who wish to translate from French to English or vice versa. Upon graduation from Concordia University, students are awarded a Master of Arts degree and can work as professional translators, interpreters, and language teachers. It’s necessary for professional translators to know their working languages at a native level, so the French-speaking environment of Montreal, where Concordia University is located, will only facilitate the process of studying.

The Faculty of Educational Sciences of the Université de Moncton offers the program of Secondary Education English. It lasts for five academic years, and the first year can also be started at any of the Université de Moncton campuses, while all five years are offered only at the campus in Moncton. The aim of the program is to train educators for high school students, i.e., from nine to twelve graders. The program is not only about teaching students strategies and methods of effective delivery of the school curriculum, but also about learning how to establish positive relationships with students, assess their results, and foster a supportive and inclusive atmosphere in a classroom. Practice is a key component in the process of teaching future educators. That’s why the Université de Moncton offers three internships during the five-year period. Students can go to Germany, the United States, France, and Switzerland during their studies as a part of an international internship or academic exchange program. At the Université de Moncton, students study the following courses: School Inclusion, French in Teaching, English Poetry and Prose, English for TESL, Linguistics, Virtual Learning Space, Health in Schools, and a number of others. The language disciplines students study during the program of Secondary Education English at the Université de Moncton are all about studying linguistics and literature of English and French profoundly, so that they can be true connoisseurs of their area to inspire secondary school students.

The Université de Moncton also offers continuing education programs for professional development and personal growth. Some of them are delivered in online mode, some on a part-time basis, and some can be undertaken during the summer period. One of the most popular programs is, of course, the French language. It can be studied within the program of French as a Second Language and as an Immersion Program. The immersion program offered by the Université de Moncton is available to middle and high school students who want to learn French in the shortest time possible.

Accommodation

International students studying at the Université  can rent an apartment in the city of Moncton. It’s the most populous city in the province, which is located right in the middle of the three Maritime provinces. That’s why it was coined as the "Hub City", where various cultural and sports events are frequently held. The city boasts a number of ancient theaters and museums that international students can visit during their leisure time. On the whole, renting an apartment in the province of New Brunswick is relatively cheap compared to the rest of Canada. The average rent price for a one-bedroom flat in the city of Moncton is around $975. A two-bedroom in the city of Edmundston will cost an international student around $600 per month. To put it into perspective, a two-bedroom flat in Vancouver will cost an average of $1,790.

Future Prospects

Having completed your studies at the Université , you may come back to your native country or to any other country in the world for work or to continue your educational path. Another feasible option for international students is to stay in Canada after their graduation from Université de Moncton for the same purposes: you may choose to pursue further studies in the field of your interest or find a job here. The Canadian government introduced a special type of visa for foreigners who have obtained post-secondary education in one of the Canadian educational institutions. The so-called "post-graduation work permit" allows international graduates of Université de Moncton to work in the country for up to three years. After this period, a former international student can apply for another visa, Express Entry, which will give them permanent resident status. If your initial goal happened to be immigration to Canada, then you can go even further and apply for Canadian citizenship. It may seem like a small step, but, as you can see, graduation from Université de Moncton can bring you many opportunities inside and outside of Canada.
